~ Homegrown Loofah Sponges ~

I never gave much thought to loofah sponges, until I read they are an easy to grow plant in the gourd family. That got me thinking how fun it would be to grow and harvest my own natural loofahs. It would be perfect with my soaps. I will have to use the greenhouse to give them the right about of growing time in this climate as they need around 130 days or so to harvest and let dry. With this growing season over, I will have all winter to plan for my very own little loofah farm.

~I tried to get my better half to do it.~

So I have began my methotrexate injections, once a week pinch alittle tummy fat and stick it in. I have to say I really did not want to do the injection myself.  I tried to get my better half to do it, he took one look at me with the needle in hand and said no way was he doing it.   Other then a nice round bruise on my stomach, it was easier then I thought it would be.

~ Farm Fresh Eggs ~

A few of my chickens have begun to lay eggs and yes, it's true they are really delicious.  The size difference between the larger chickens and the smaller bantam eggs is notable. I also found some really cute retro egg cartons from eggcartons.com so I can share some of our fresh eggs with others.

~ What is Nag Champa ?

I am often asked what is Nag Champa? So here is a lovely description of it. This incense is part of a family of Indian scents known as champa incenses, because they are all reminiscent of the champa flower, better known to Westerners as plumeria. Many champa incenses also include plumeria as an ingredient, harnessing its rich, sweet, heavy scent. Nag champa also traditionally includes a resin extracted from the Ailanthus tree, an Asian native, along with sandalwood.

~Don't scare the garden gnomes~

Love, love, my Walls-O-Water, springtime in the Sierra's is so predictably unpredictable. Most of the garden is already planted, lots of little sprouts starting to make an appearance. Hard to imagine the bounty of edibles that will be harvested again with this years plantings. In all those walls-o-water, squash, zuchinni, peas, beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Planted some Black Cherry tomatoes, really excited about those!

The photo below is the bed I grow the bulk of my onions, garlic, chives, and most other kitchen herbs. I do interplant with marigolds to help with bug control and if need be use diatomaceous earth also.

I have had to resort to Fort Knox style gardening to keep out the rabbits, birds, squirrels and occasional racoons.

Here is our greenhouse.

I am going to build a much larger pond in the backyard this season and hope to get a bee-hive going.
